WCPL Experimental Weather Forecast

Weather Monitoring

Weather monitoring based on geostationary satellite (MTSAT) infra red (IR) channel 1 (wavelength : 10.3-11.3 µm) imagery. Original data is provided at near real time by Kochi University, coverage area : N70 - S20, E70 - E160, horizontal resolution : 1/20 degree (1800 x 1800 pixels), image format : PGM (Portable Gray Map) with gzip compression. In this monitoring page, plotted parameter is TBB (Temperature Black Body) over The Maritime Continent. Low TBB values indicate the presence of high clouds. In convective regions, high clouds means deep convection which is strongly correlated with high rainfall area.

Numerical Weather Prediction Model Output

Visit this page to see the output of global weather prediction model. The original data is provided by NOAA at 3-hr interval in GRIB format but we can only download at 6-hr interval up to 48 hours forecast time. Plotted parameter is OLR (outgoing longwave radiation) and horizontal wind at 10 m height for Asia region (60N - 30S, 70E - 160E) with horizontal resolution of 1 degree. Almost the same as TBB, low OLR values (blue-colored) indicate the presence of high clouds. The regions of active monsoon are thus indicated by wide area of blue-shading.

We at WCPL - ITB are experimentally running regional weather model by downscaling the GFS model output using Penn State/NCAR MM5 model. Our regional model covers Indonesia and its neighboring countries (15S - 15N, 90E - 150E) with horizontal resolution of 30 km. Model output parameter plotted in this page is 3-hourly accummulated convective rainfall and horizontal wind at 10 m.

For more detailed mesoscale weather forecasting, smaller domain are nested to the MM5 Regional Model. Currently, we run a sub-regional model covering Java Island including Bali Island and Southern part of Sumatera Island (4S - 10S, 102E - 116E) with a horzional resolution of 10 km. Plotted parameters are 3-hourly convective rainfall, temperature at 2 m height, and surface equivalent potential temperature θe.

Based on numerical weather prediction above, we try (just an experiment) to made a weather forecasting for a few city in Indonesia, mainly in Java island. By using Google Map, we put the forecast spatialy twice a day. Make sure to see the initial valid time, because the forecast was arranged according to the lead time. In this map we also put the Imsakiah or Moslem praying time and also the newest earthquake information from USGS.

Ocean Wave Model Output

Ocean Wave Model Output

One of our ongoing work is to run NOAA WAVEWATCH III for regional ocean wave forecasting at 30 km resolution in collaboration with The Research Centre for Marine Territories and Nonliving Resources of Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research.
